Brows and lashes are the two things that change a face fastest, and the two services people are most confused about. Shaping, tinting, lifting. Three words that describe three different things, none of which explain themselves.
Here is what each one does, how they combine, how long they last, and how to look after them.
The short version
Brow shaping by waxing or threading sets the shape and lasts two to four weeks. Brow tinting adds colour so brows read fuller and lasts three to four weeks. A lash lift curls your own lashes from the base and lasts six to eight weeks, following the natural lash cycle. It needs no infills, and is usually paired with a lash tint.
Brow Shaping
The foundation. Everything else works better on a shape that suits your face.
Shaping is done by waxing or threading, and the right choice depends on your skin rather than on preference.
Waxing is quicker, pulls fine hair along with coarse, and gives a very clean line.
Threading is more precise, touches less of the skin surface, and is usually the better option if your skin is reactive, if you are using retinol, or if you want a very controlled shape.
If you are not sure, mention it when you book and your esthetician will recommend based on your skin.
Worth knowing: the most common brow regret is over shaping. Brows grow back more slowly than the rest of your facial hair, and repeated over tweezing can permanently thin an area. A good shape works with the brow you have.
Brow Tint
Colour applied to the brow hair, and often to the fine hair around it, so the shape reads fuller and more defined without makeup.
The difference is most dramatic on fair or grey brow hair, where there is often more hair present than shows up. Tinting reveals what is already there.
It is the single fastest way to stop filling in your brows every morning.
Lash Lift
A curl set into your own lashes from the base, so they lift and open the eye. It is the alternative to eyelash curlers, and it lasts far longer than a morning.
No lashes are added. Your own lashes are curled and set, which is why it needs no infills, no maintenance appointments, and no adjustment to how you wash your face.
A lash tint is usually done alongside, which darkens the lashes for definition. That combination is what most people are picturing when they imagine the result.
Who it suits: anyone with straight or downward growing lashes, contact lens wearers, and anyone who wants an open, defined eye without daily effort or ongoing upkeep.
The Ultimate Lash & Brow Package
Brow waxing and tinting, plus lash lifting and tinting, in one appointment.
It is the complete version of everything above and a common choice before a wedding, a holiday, a milestone birthday, or any stretch where you want to spend less time on your face each morning.
It is also the most efficient way to try everything at once and find out which parts you want to keep up.
How Long Each Lasts
| Service | Roughly lasts | Rebook |
|---|---|---|
| Brow shaping | 2 to 4 weeks | Every 2 to 4 weeks |
| Brow tint | 3 to 4 weeks | With or between shaping appointments |
| Lash lift | 6 to 8 weeks | When your natural cycle has grown it out |
Shaping is the one that needs consistent upkeep. A lash lift has a longer runway, and repeating it too frequently is not better. The hair needs the time in between, which is the same principle behind picking a booking rhythm.
Aftercare
After tinting. Keep the area dry for the first day, and avoid steam, saunas, and swimming during that window. Skip strong exfoliants and retinol on the brow area for a couple of days.
After a lash lift. Keep lashes dry for the first day. No mascara, no eye makeup remover, no swimming, no steam. After that, treat them normally, and brush them through gently to keep them sitting well.
After shaping. Some redness for a short while is normal. Avoid heat and heavy products on the area for the rest of the day.
Your esthetician will walk you through exactly what to do for the combination you had, and it is worth actually following it for the first day, because that day determines how well the result holds.
Before an Event
Brow shaping, five to seven days ahead. Brows look their most natural a few days after shaping, not immediately.
Tinting, three to five days ahead. Colour settles slightly as it wears in, so a few days out is more flattering than the morning of.
Lash lifts, at least a week ahead, and ideally not for the first time. A lift changes your look more than people expect, and you want time to get used to it.
Never a first time appointment in the final week. This applies to every service, and to these especially, because they are on your face and impossible to hide. If you are planning a wedding, our bridal beauty timeline puts all of it in order.
Sensitivities
Tinting products can cause reactions in some people, so mention any known sensitivities, previous reactions, or allergies when you book. Your esthetician will let you know whether a patch test ahead of your appointment is recommended for what you are having done.
Also mention it if you use retinol, have had a recent facial treatment, or wear contact lenses, since all three affect how the appointment is approached. What to expect on a first visit covers how the intake form works.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a brow tint do?
A tint adds colour to the brow hair, and often to the fine hair around it, so the shape reads fuller and more defined without makeup. The difference is most noticeable on fair or grey brow hair.
What is a lash lift?
A curl set into your own lashes from the base, so they lift and open the eye. No lashes are added, and it needs no infills or change to how you wash your face.
How long does a lash lift last?
Roughly six to eight weeks, which follows your natural lash growth cycle. It grows out gradually rather than needing removal.
Can I wear makeup after a lash lift?
Not for the first day. Keep lashes dry and free of mascara and eye makeup remover for that window, then carry on as normal.
Is waxing or threading better for brows?
It depends on your skin. Threading is gentler on the skin surface and better for reactive skin or anyone using retinol. Waxing is quicker and gives a very clean line. Mention your skin when you book.
How far before a wedding should I book brows and lashes?
Shaping five to seven days ahead, tinting three to five days ahead, and a lash lift at least a week ahead. Avoid any first time appointment in the final week.
